Snap traps are a small amphibian with a venomous bite.

Myth and Origin

JungleRun - info on the prehistoric guy here when I finish planning out his info

Types of Snap Trap
The currently known subspecies of snap trap.

Standard - The most common of snap traps. Standard snap traps are by far the most bold and adventurous. However, like all they are easily startled, resulting in them inflating to make themselves appear larger.

Hooded - Similar in build to the standard snap trap, but slightly longer bodied/necked. Hooded snaps are capable of fanning out their 'hood' for an expressive display in order to warn off any threat who happen to cross their path. They are by far the most aggressive of the snap trap subspecies and are equipped with a venom potent enough to kill.

Plated - Of all the subspecies of snap trap, plated snap traps are the most timid. Unlike their standard counterpart, plated snaps cannot inflate to appear bigger and instead will coil into a tight ball for protection. This action will allow their plated armour to guard them against others.

Sleek - The rarest of the snap trap subspecies. Sleek snap traps have one defining feature, their long bodies. Though they are still equipped with their venom, they lack the defensive measures that other subspecies of snap traps have. Which is the leading rumour as to why sleek snap traps are so few in number.

Distant Relatives
A list of other species that are distantly related to snap traps.

Physical Features

● All Snap traps have sticky toes/palms/feet that allow them to climb any kind of surface.

● They are an amphibian based species and are equipped with both gills and lungs, allowing them to live both on land and in water.

● Their fangs cannot retract or fold. They are always present.

● The jagged shape on their outer mouth is their pronounced egg teeth that don't disappear when they're older, unlike most animals.

● Their eyes are always slitted. Other shapes are not possible, but they can and will dilate at times.

● All snap traps have feelers just above their eyes, which are rather sensitive to the touch.

● Another feature all snap traps have are their pointed ears. Though it is questioned if these are really ears, as they have no opening.

● Their tongues are wide and forked.

● Snap traps come in a wide variety of colours and markings.

Traits and Mutations

[ Common Traits ]

Fur: While all snap traps have a frog like skin, some can grow fur over top.
Scattered Scales: Just as they can grow fur, many can grow scales.

[ Uncommon Traits ]

Whisker Mutation: An uncommon trait of some snap traps. These whiskers act as sensitive 'feelers.'
Horns: While not every snap trap have them, some have been known to grow horns. Which can grow in a wide variety of size, shape, and number.

[ Very Uncommon ]

Spine/Shard Mutation: Spines and shards don't happen often, but like horns, come in a variety of shape, size, and number and are usually located along the back. These are two separate mutations.
Luminous markings: Every now and then a snap will grow and develop markings that can produce a natural glow. This trait is hardly ever seen.
Clustered Scales: While scales are common in snap traps, they are more commonly thin, hard to see, and often scattered. However, some have been known to grow a showy display of dense scales, covering selective areas of their body.
Crystalline Horns: Horns grow in crystal clear. Not to be confused with shard mutation affected horns.

[ Rare Traits ]

Fin Mutation: While snap traps can live an aquatic life, they do not require fins. In fact, any snap trap with fins on their body are considered a rare oddity.
Feathered Fluff Mutation: No snap trap can actually grow wings, however, some can get a rare mutation of fluff that appears almost feather like on their bodies.
Blister Mutation: 'Blisters' are actually a rare deformity resulting in smaller venom sacs appearing on other parts of the body.
Multi-Coloured Venom: A rare mutation that happens during the time that they are in the egg sac. Normally they are born with one colour from either of the parents. However, on rare occasions, some will be born with both.
This mutation has multiple types ie: two colours in the same eye, two different eye colours etc. The venom sac will always have a mixture of the two colours, however.

[ Very Rare Traits ]

Exaggerated Feelers: TBA
Bright Eyes: A trait that causes a snaps eyes to glow.
Stinger: TBA
False Multi-Colour: Mimics the ring type trait of multi-coloured venom around the pupil. Very rarely can affect the colour of the pupil as well.

[ Ultra Rare Traits ]

Multiple Tails: A very rare mutation that results in two or more tails.
Abnormal Growth: Very rarely a snap trap will grow a strange mutation in the venom sac. The cause is unknown, and the shapes vary, but it is assumed that these growths are harmless.
Soft Shell Mutation: Similar to that of the plated snap traps, snaps with soft shell mutation have a thin, soft, protective shell covering their back and tail.
Chameleon: Snaps with this trait are able to change the colours and sometimes markings. They can have as little as two and as many as four different colourations.
Glass: Snap traps born with this trait have a somewhat translucent skin that can either affect part of their body or all of it.
Sparking: TBA

Venom

● Standard, plated, and sleek snap trap venom is not lethal. If a snap trap were to bite, usually the worst that would happen, would be the victim would experience extreme pain and become quite ill. The one exception to this is the hooded ( cobra type ) snap traps, who do have lethal venom.

● Their venom is contained within a thick skin. This skin can be punctured and their venom can ooze out. If this were to happen, a snap trap's body will react and immediately stop producing venom. Though this process doesn't really harm the snap trap, it will leave them defenceless until the puncture heals and they are able to produce venom again.

● Unless a snap trap has a more potent venom than the other, snap traps cannot harm themselves or each other with their venom.

● The colour of their venom is hereditary. They will inherit the colour from either the mother or their father. Very rarely will they get a combination of both. This will also determine the colour of their eyes, and insides, sticky pads etc.

Facts

● Snap traps are in a way like pack rats. They like to collect and hoard things. Whether it is something shiny, food, or just plain old garbage, they will collect whatever grabs their attention.

● Snap traps with fur will often stash food in their fur; often resulting in sticky and matted fur.

● While snap traps can't really speak, they can mimic the sounds and words they hear. Otherwise they simply have a variety of loud, high pitched, squeaky calls.

● Though snap traps are not the brightest bulbs in the box, they are intelligent enough to understand some speech.

● A group of snap traps is called a 'horde.'

● The life cycle for a snap trap is "egg - tadpole - metamorph - adult."

● Tadpoles and metamorphs have no control over the amount of venom they produce, making them more dangerous than adult snap traps.

● The majority of metamorphs will retain their tail. Though almost all will lose their fins.

● Snap traps are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods. However, their preferred foods are small rodents, fish, and insects.

● Common and hooded snap traps can run as well as jump long distances. If they happen to have feathered fluff mutation or a fin mutation ( depending on the location and size of the fins ), they are even able to glide. However, unlike the others plated snaps are too heavy leap a fair distance, but can still run and hop, while sleek snaps are only capable of slithering and climbing.

● Snap traps are in a way like dinosaurs and can have both fur and feathers.

● In spite of their ears and possible whisker mutation, snaps have no relation to felines at all. In fact, the whisker mutation is not solely limited to a feline style and can result in various types of whiskers. However, they do have some similar characteristics to felines.
